Re: code books,

Thanks for the help, one of the links mentions that older vw dealers have key code books that if I get the key numbers from inside the locks they can source the keys for me. Has anyone done this? Also does anyone know a vw dealer who has been around for he last 30 years? Thanks Hi Jon, I lost my ke...

a happy update!!

I never found the orginals, so I'm still gonna have to drill out the fuel filler. But the rest is sorted :D For anyone else searching the boards in a similar situation in the future, the details are here. 1) Removed glove box lock - no number found 2) Removed ignition housing etc - no number visable...

sliding door is best bet, only one screw after taking the door card off aaaaaggghhh, nothing is simple  I went and had a go at this... unfortunately (in this instance) I have an auto-home with "U" shaped seating, which means I can't get to the back screws of the (covered in carpet) d...

Hi SyncroAndy, I have also read that and ideally is what I'd like to do - but I'm struggling with identifying the correct number. I now have the lock out of the glove compartment which worked on the same key (but could probably be opened with anything) and one of the door handles off (I can see this...

lol, the fridge was the first place my fella suggested after the usual places (kitchen side, arm of the sofa) had failed - we found his ciggies in there last week. They aren't there tho, or in the freezer, behind the loo or under the bed, I think they have either fallen out of a coat pocket or...

Hi Guys, It was one key for all the doors and ignition. Different key for the fuel filler cap, but that's not so much of a problem. Am quite confused by all the different things I've read - things like the ignition barrel/stearing lock housing being a sealed unit (so can this lock be changed or need...

Auto-sleeper - how much weight in top bed?

I have an '81 autosleeper with solidside poptop and the u-shaped seating arrangement. My plan for an upcoming festival weekend is that 2 of us will sleep in van, and one in the awning (all adults)..BUT..if it's as cold as it has been, I think there will be tears before bedtime and they wont be mine ...

replacing piston rings...

My short question (in case you get board of reading my tale of woe!) is: How much work/time is involved in replacing piston rings, compared to swapping a complete engine.. ?? Tale of Woe follows: I recently replaced my original 1.6 NA diesel engine which died with big end bearing and piston rings pr...

Hi Wilfers, JMS in cheltenham (not to far from you) recently told me that to replace my 1.6 NA would be approx 2 - 2.5K (including labour) , And they'd only do it if they sourced/supplied the engine, but didn't say from where. However, someone on one of the boards recommended www.elitevws.co...

from 1.6NA to 1.9 (AAZ or 1Y)

Hi, following the demise of my 1.6NA engine this week it looks like an upgrade to either an AAZ or 1Y is on the cards - by someone with much more automotive engineering skills than me  He's done plenty other vehicles but this'll be his first T25 so I'm trying to gather lots of info to make it a...

Hi, many thanks all for the replies. I'd already taken my fella along (falls into the 40 something bracket  ) but he didn't really want to commit to a diagnosis due to lack of diesel knowlege, although he didn't think it was head gasket. A mechanically capable (& under 40  ) workmate h...

diagnosing potentialy terminal engine problem..?

Hi, posted this on Sat, but looks like it got lost in the weekends problems (maybe I am jinxed  ) - apologies if it ends up appearing twice. I was overjoyed to get my '82 1.6 NA diesel back on the road on this weekend after a few weeks of changing bits and pieces (starter motor, throttle cable...
