How much work/time is involved in replacing piston rings, compared to swapping a complete engine.. ??
Tale of Woe follows:
I recently replaced my original 1.6 NA diesel engine which died with big end bearing and piston rings problems etc. it has been replaced by a 1Y 1.9 NA diesel from a Golf. In the last week I have done about 80 miles in half a dozen short journeys and she goes much better and sounds lovely..
However, on the way home today the oil light started flashing, so stopped to have a look to find the oil filler cap (apparently) blown off and some oil lost... something that happened to my 1.6 a couple of times in its last month. Searching all the forums looks like the cause of this is often high crankcase pressure caused by worn piston rings

Am going to get a compression test sorted out, but if it turns out this is the problem, I have to decide what to do...
The replacement engine came from a VW breakers with a 60 (or 90?) day guarentee so I can get them to replace it, but of course, I want to start using it and I am paying someone else (mechanically excellent friend) to do the work. So, I need to decide whether to go for another replacement, or ask for some money back towards repairing this one.. any opinions/advice appreciated.
Many Thanks!
Jen.
