replacing piston rings...

Post by daydream-believer »

My short question (in case you get board of reading my tale of woe!) is:

How much work/time is involved in replacing piston rings, compared to swapping a complete engine.. ??

Tale of Woe follows:

I recently replaced my original 1.6 NA diesel engine which died with big end bearing and piston rings problems etc. it has been replaced by a 1Y 1.9 NA diesel from a Golf. In the last week I have done about 80 miles in half a dozen short journeys and she goes much better and sounds lovely..

However, on the way home today the oil light started flashing, so stopped to have a look to find the oil filler cap (apparently) blown off and some oil lost... something that happened to my 1.6 a couple of times in its last month. Searching all the forums looks like the cause of this is often high crankcase pressure caused by worn piston rings :(

Am going to get a compression test sorted out, but if it turns out this is the problem, I have to decide what to do...

The replacement engine came from a VW breakers with a 60 (or 90?) day guarentee so I can get them to replace it, but of course, I want to start using it and I am paying someone else (mechanically excellent friend) to do the work. So, I need to decide whether to go for another replacement, or ask for some money back towards repairing this one.. any opinions/advice appreciated.

Many Thanks!
Jen.

It will most likely need a rebore if there is excessive blow by, not really economical to repair if your paying someone else to do it.

Has the breathers been checked.

I have had this problem i remember picking up an engine from a breaker but within 4 weeks it started blowing oil out of the rocker breather.I went back to the dealer who said as soon as there was a replacement engine they would let me no.I was so keen to get back on the road i stripped it down and put new crankshaft shells and oil controll rings. It worked for a while this was in the days of the ford anglia and minis. There was these rings that had a step on the top and a special oil control ring made by hepolite it worked only for a short while. If you want an opinion take the engine back and get them to change it even if you have to wait if there is not one in
