Can't disable buzzer of doom

Post by Alex56 »

I've got good oil pressure but the buzzer comes on as soon as I rev the engine.

I've earthed the wire which goes down to the switch by the pulley, and I've unplugged the plug which goes to the back of the speedo, but it still comes on.

If I unplug the White multi plug behind the clock it doesn't buzz, but then I have no fuel gauge, temp guage, etc.

What to do next?

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks, Alex

It still buzzes if you unplug the black plug on the back of the speedo?
Am I reading that right?

If so, this makes no sense to me. Are you sure you aren't disconnecting the speedo cable?

Not patronising you, but if you unplug the rectangle black 9pin connector - I think it's nine from memory, but could be seven - I can't see how it can still buzz.

I don't know much about the BOD circuit, but I think there is a low and high pressure switch. One where you describe and one underneath.
If you are sure oil is at correct level and pressure is good, then check the other oil pressure switch too.

Someone here will describe exactly where it is.

It doesn't make any sense to me either, definitely unplugged the electrical plug on top of the speedo, not the speedo drive cable.

I wondered if there is another buzzer?

Or another connector plug?

Or maybe some sort of short circuit in the printed circuit board? But the don't all the connections to the buzzer go through that plug?

Feels like it's haunted!

I may remove the whole buzzer bit and see what happens. It can wait until tomorrow :(

You could try disconnecting the green wire to the white plug.
I think - again piecing together bits from memory - that the BOD uses the green wire from the coil to tell it revs are over 2000 rpm.
It's a crude way of proving it, but may work.

I'm starting to doubt myself here lol.
Perhaps there is another buzzer on your van?

Try listening out to see if it is definitely that one buzzing when it activates. I have had my dash pod right off and there is deffo no other connection other than that black connector.

Start from scratch mate. Something isn't adding up.

If you are 100% your oil pressure is good, correct levels and correct type for van, then try these links from the WIKI It looks like many have been here before you..!!:

Thanks Smiffo, appreciate your input.

I've found another buzzer but it's not A VW item... I think a PO has installed it to warn if lights are on and ignition off...

I've disconnected it and the buzzer is gone but I've lost the headlights... I can sort this though!

Well at least you don't have to worry about oil pressure circuit now.
I would follow the wiring from the buzzer you found.

Get some photos and pop them up if easy to get a good view of where they terminate.

Out of curiosity - is this a new van, and if not, is this a new fault that has occurred?
How did it operate before?
( Did buzzr go when engine off and lights on, or did you have to open a door too etc? )

Not sure I will be able to work out this in my mind remotely, but it can't be rocket science.
If you know how it used to work, you can see if it is like this:

Smiffo

Ive had the van for a while, it was given to me by someone who knew I would save it rather than see it scrapped. There have been many problems, mainly caused by previous owners who were not quite as smart as they thought they were. On the whole returning to the standard vw specification has sorted it. I think the buzzer was attached to some ancillary lights long gone, but I cant be sure, there was a snake pits of wires and cramp on connectors. Typically I fix one problem and it throws up another! Anyway all the mess of wires and buzzer
now gone and lights all working.

I thought the link you posted was interesting... Not seen that before, will do it

Thanks for your input

Going back to the original post. If you earthed the sensor wire and this didn't stop the buzzer, perhaps you have the same problem I recently fixed. The sensor wire had a break in the conductor at the point where it left the main loom sleeving at the rear of the engine. Everything here is pretty hard & stiff due to heat over the years. (it originally had a turbo-diesel engine).

I had a 1989 westy that was fitted with an additional lights on buzzer......a small white buzzer tucked up behind the clocks....this was connected via an additional relay in the fuse box (maybe 21 relay no) not sure if this was factory fitted or aftermarket

My lights on buzzer is a relay on the main fuse/relay board.
