windscreen washer jet corrosion.

Post by bigbadbob76 »

Hi to the group.
I'm a newbie here (see my intro in readers rides) so please bear with me. :P
I've just bought a very rusty '86 T25 DG and want to address the worst of the rust first and do the rest bit by bit as I go along.
I'm getting water ingress that pools in the drivers footwell, I've traced this to the area around the washer jet being rusted out, poking with a screwdriver has left a hole about an inch or so diameter around the jet so I've filled it with sealant for now but i'm looking for recommendations for a better fix.
Is it safe to mig weld a plate over the hole in this area without removing the windscreen and is there anything behind the jet (apart from the jet feed pipe)that would fry if I did?
or am I safer riveting the plate on and using sealant?
Thanks in advance and thanks for the wealth of technical expertese on here.

I think water will be entering via screen surround rust. Documented in wiki.
Hope not,

Welcome to the forum :D Sounds like a windscreen out job, you're probably going to have more rust damage below the old seal. As above have a look in the wiki, you'll also need a new seal to put the screen back in.

Thanks for the warning guys, I dread what i'll find if I pop the screen out, trying to re-build around the seal and get it sealing properly could be tricky.
is it new panel time if theres a lot of rust under the seal?

Thanks for the link CovKid.
My well has dried up since I sealed around the washer jet so I won't be disturbing the screen rubber until I have to, I'm sure that time will come. :P
I'll rivet in a plate to hold the washer jet properly until then.
When money/time/garage space/weather allow I'll do a proper job on it.
