Hello and welcome to the madhouse!

€7,500 does sound a wee bit expensive for a van with those faults - unless it really is rust free.

You said the faults would be fixed. Is that at his expense or at yours?

The gas struts can be replaced fairly cheaply with heavy duty ones capable of lifting the bike rack (without the bikes, of course!) so that should not be a real worry. I replaced mine a few months back for £35, and the back hatch near takes my chin off when I open it now. Always replace them as a pair. It's false economy to only replace one, even if only one is faulty.

My first worry would be any bodywork rust, as this is the most expensive item to put right, next engine and/or mechanical problems and last of all, air conditioning (unless you plan on going to some hot countries on your travels?).

Good luck with the van, and get some photos up so we can see what a beauty it is. :ok

If you buy it replace the struts with ones from brickwerks cheap to buy and less than 5 mins to fit, first thing I did on both my vans.
But like others have said I would be more concerned by what ever type of fluid is leaking out of it and the overheating.

meggles wrote:As said above. A couple of new tailgate struts should sort it. My tailgate flies up even with the bike rack on. I fitted new struts last year. Over heating? Oil leak (at front :? )? More important then tailgate struts. Are you having an independant inspection? Don't want to sound nasty but do you know anything about vehicles? If not I'd strongly suggest you get someone knowledgable to have a look for you.
I know nothing about engines or that kinda stuff its nigh on impossible to get someone to look at it,im buying it on honesty from the company as they come recomended krazy kombie in kilkenny you can see the van on there web site 1989 limited edition carat 24 .in buses for sale down the bottom of the page

Just back to original post - with old struts the cheapest way to keep the boot up with a bike rack on - the old copper pipe trick. 2 lengths of 8 inches or so cut lengthways slipped over strut works a treat

Yep I agree with that! A bit of copper pipe covered with yellow tape slipped over the strut. Mine dont move at all and cost me nothing! :ok
If in doubt give it a clout!
