We swapped from a 1.9 DG to a 2.1 DJ and it's like having a different van altogether. I know we live in a hilly area but the 2.1 just sails up hills almost as if they weren't there. The 2.1 is slightly more economical (using the DG carb and gas coversion). Can't comment on the DF>DG question.

Having driven your van, its comparable with my 2.0 Aircooled, i've driven a couple of DG'd vans and they are noticably better for cruising and accelerating. Bare in mind is we're not talking huge differences in power (about 18hp), but even df to a dg is about 30% up on power . I've driven 1 MV and it blew me away how good it was to drive, 112hp (when new) makes for a lot of fun in a wedge.
If you give it a 4/5 weeks i'll take you out in the MV and you can see what you think, it'll be going to farnham for MOT anyway.

Right. Whether right or wrong, I've sourced a 2.1 and now will need to know what I might expect to encounter when going from a DF to this.
I talked to the guy at Elite and he advised against changing from the DF, said it does fine and although I respect his advise and too a degree can see what he is saying (I don't find mine that bad, even though it is obviously worn out and probably has a head leak) I shall be going ahead with rebuilding and changing.
While he was talking he mentioned that there might be quite a few differences to think about, he said the clutch would be a different size for a start, and brackets for the exhaust.
I'm not too worried about these bits, but does anyone know of any other gotcha's it is worth thinking about?
And which is the best double carb setup? And what manifolds for them?
Lots of questions to follow I'm sure, so please allow me to imbibe of your wise knowledge and experience.

no need
I would use a DG manifold and a pierburg 2e3 set up for a 1.9, which are plentiful .. maybe a 2.1 gearbox (longer fourth).

I know what you are saying, but I'd like to go a bit further with the search for more power. So unless there is so little gain from a 2 carb setup that it really wouldn't be worth it, I'd like to try it.
I'm definitely thinking about gearing, but as I still have to find my choice of wheel/tyre I'll put it to one side for a bit. I would expect to change it though.

Looking at the 2.1 at work a good free flowing exhaust shouldn't be a problem to knock up.

Give up Kev, it's getting like Saxo Central in here, common sense has little if any place anymore.

Likewise, if over the past 6 years I've broken it and fixed it (or helped others fix it) then I'll comment.
As for the twin carbs .. you wouldn't believe the number of folks who've ditched their Pierburg carb for a Weber or whatever and then you see them back on here asking about their issues with the new carb set-up.

ah but most of those probs of which you speak are with single weber replacements for the pierburg
the dual twin choke conversion is a very good option.
its costly and will need setting on a rolling road too....

See what code your box is, as most DF engined vans had slightly taller gearing as the engine doesnt ref as high and produces reasonable torque..
DO NOT us the DF manifold etc as it will restrict performance..
USE a DG dizzy....... either with the dg carb/manifold etc or witht he twin carbs..
If you use the twin carbs DO get them dyno'd and set up properly...
No the overall power isnt a huge amount higher.. DF 60, DG 78, MV 95 (wuto 89), DJ 112........ but the torque is the bonus..
Need to get a DG carbed 2.1 on the dyno to see what its really producing.. soon will do..
