Re: Is a pop top any good in the wind?
Never had any problems with pop top in the wind but it is worth having a silver screen for the pop top as it stops the canvas flapping otherwise can be quite noisey.

If its only for an overnighter and you want the pub, go to the Plume of Feathers in Princetown you can camp out the back.

Re: 1.6TD tune up help please
The bit from the smokey JX thread that made the biggest difference to our van (like having a new engine) was sorting out the exhaust manifold

Re: Filling Seams ??
Sikaflex is quite expensive, my local motor factor sells a different brand (same stuff in tube, air curing urethane) for half the price, can't remember brand but shop around

Re: 4 speed or 5 speed 1.6TD ...??!!
Got the 5 speed on ours and its OK, you get used to the dog-leg 1st-2nd shift. If 5th is a taller gear then I would go for that we can cruise at 65/70 no probs.

Re: best way to 'spruce' up and old engine (1.6td)
While you are doing the exhaust check out the manifold for any signs of blowing (especially No 4) . I have just sorted the exhaust manifold on my 1.6TD as per Simon Baxters "definitve smokey JX thread" and its like having a new engine. The job is a bit of a devil but manageable, seized on ...

1.6TD exhaust manifold and turbo
Have just stripped out the exhaust manifold and its away for skimming at the moment. As usual some of the manifold studs came out instead of the nuts coming off should I loctite them back into head before rebuilding? Having searched the site torque settings I have found are 18lb-ft for the manifold ...

Re: Exhaust weld failed twice...
The rubber mounts may solve your problem but the whole set up is not well designed. I have a 1990 1.6TD and the exhaust mounts are a nightmare. When I replaced the exhaust I went through all the mounts replaced missing bolts and tightened everything up, all was well. Then the offside silencer bracke...

Re: petrol cap key
I got new keys cut at Abel alarms £5 each including cutting, they had the right blanks on their standard car key board, they were very helpful and the keys work perfectly despite the originals being very worn

Re: 1.6TD tappets
Thanks everybody
I better stop thinking about it and get on and do it, found a place thats got the shims, just got to get a tool and a digital vernier. thought 2 hours work and £120 was a bit of a rip off, might as well spend money on the tools and next time I'll be set.
thanks again
regards
steve

1.6TD tappets
Think that the tappets need adjusting on our 1.6TD, but here the fun begins. Thought that they were probably shim adjusted and started trying to find somebody who could do the job, only people I could find wanted £120 to do it. Then whilst trying to find a supply of shims to do the job myself a blok...

Re: Belt set up
Our 1990 1.6 td uses the two belt system, you just need to be careful to check and adjust both belts, as previous poster said the water pump belt is adjusted by splitting the pulley and removing shims as the belt wears/stretches, remember to keep the removed shims safe you will need them when you ch...

Re: Pop top roof brackets...what are they for???
They are fake gutters so that you can fit a standard old fashioned roof rack that used to go on the gutters of a car you will need quite long bars though.
