There's a good thread on the Brickyard about setting up/tuning a JX.

The bit from the smokey JX thread that made the biggest difference to our van (like having a new engine) was sorting out the exhaust manifold

Your air filter IS spotless?
Only 1 spanner required, not £48/hour man...
Can make a big difference...
PS There isn't that much to tune on a TD diesel if its boosting right (7~10 psi) and no-ones backed the fuel-screw off, so watch you don't spend £££ for a marginal result.
.. but yes, get the oil and filter changed for sure, and make that regular as clockwork for a TD diesel.

Re: 1.6TD tune up help please
i'll check the Air filter later and maybe just get a new one.. The service was done 2k ago i think as she's got FSH .
The rest i'll have to get checked out ... A Tappet sounds abit to noisy as well.. I don't mind the amount of fuel used ,just want alittle more low rev torque.

Re: 1.6TD tune up help please
Does she start OK, in very cold weather ?
Should start boosting from circa 1800~2000 rpm, 2200 latest should be rising rapidly with boot down...
It's not a biggy to sort a boost gauge, or even a temporary one in cab to check, v.cheap or borrow, just the loose running of small-bore tube really and a 'Y' piece at the Injector LDA connection
And is a new air filter on the invoice???The service was done 2k ago i think as she's got FSH .

Re: 1.6TD tune up help please
hi Choplee - I've taken my van to a place in orpington that I'd recommend if you are looking for someone in Kent. Called Meadow Garage
Market Meadow
Orpington BR5 3NW
01689 870 749
The guy who owns it used to have a T25, has a split screen now (I know! I don't why either ).

Bingo! Black is baaad... even a bit grey is bad with a TD's mass air flow rate
Mr Brickwerks Baxter always says 'Tappets are where he always starts with these diesels, else yer pissing in't wind'

PS. If it is black~sooty, suspect been run with a blowing exhaust manifold
If it's black, oily suspect, check inlet air source, or oil breather pipes/cambox valve
If it's black, dirt, well, PO was a tight git ...
