Both the same final drive, so it makes no difference

5 speed gives you an extra intermediate gear makes it a bit better for hill climbing or towing but 4 speed a stronger box.

The dogleg first can be a bit of a nuisance.
Theoretically you can drive off from standstill in 2nd, but with a heavy, fully loaded camper it is advisable to actually use first gear.
If your gear selector mechanics are in any way worn / badly adjusted, starting off in first will see you darting off the line only to roll to a gear crunching, red faced, swear word mumbling, embarassing re-start about five yards later in the middle of the crossroads because you couldn't get that &*%$£! 2nd gear in

final drive aint the same the 5th gear is taller than 4th, I know thats a fact as I have a Aiden Talbot special gearbox in my van and he fitted a 5th gear where my 4th should be (4 speed box) I now have a 5% increase! (which does make a massive difference!)

There are different ratios in the different boxes, here are the two main ones for the 1.6TD
code / gears / 1st / 2nd / 3rd / 4th / 5th / final drive
ABH / 4 G / 3,78 / 2,06 / 1,23 / 0,78 / - - / 5,43
3H / 5 G / 4,11 / 2,33 /1,48 /1,02 /0,82 /4,83

Got the 5 speed on ours and its OK, you get used to the dog-leg 1st-2nd shift. If 5th is a taller gear then I would go for that we can cruise at 65/70 no probs.

Re: 4 speed or 5 speed 1.6TD ...??!!
Thanks guys for your input into my gearbox selection when looking for next T25.....
I have an 82 on the cards with a 4 speed holdsworth villa 3 with elevation roof ...
The gears just seem longer than my 5 speed ,but i'm sure the 0-60 is almost the same...ha ha ......
But was worried that it would maybe struggle abit more than the 5 speed.
