Re: No Timing Marks on CU Air Cooled
Right - that's very, helpful. Thanks. Whilst I was mucking about trying to find the TDC mark earlier today. I noticed a blob of paint (which I initially thought was a drip from the respray) which when under the strobe came in at 10 deg BTDC. When I pulled No 1 spark plug and watched the piston and w...

How odd...
Where is the TDC mark in relation to the cutout in the centre of the pulley (the one the 3052 crank turning tool fits into). Say if the centre cutout is at 12.00 O'clock where's the TDC mark?
It may help with the hunt!

No Timing Marks on CU Air Cooled
My 1981 2.0l air cooled CU engined van doesn't seem to have any timing marks on the crank pulley. I've carefully checked both front and back of the pulley for a notch or dimple or am I missing something obvious? I've fitted a timing scale (it didn't have one when I got it). It runs and idles ok but ...

Decoding 10 digit VINs
I'm having a little difficulty decoding the VIN on my van as it doesn't have a 17 digit number but a 10 digit - starts with 25A. The only copy I can find is the one stamped on the rear of the front R/H chassis outrigger (which matches the V5C and MOT). Nothing on either door pillar. I believe it's a...

The 2 litre Aircooled are different:

You can see the mangled plug.

Re: Cheap Coolant Pipes ?
When I raced bangers in the late 80s early 90s we used the yellow gas pipes (the gas board obviously didn't want them as they just left them by the side of the road) to supply the radiators which were relocated in the rear window/boot. They stood up to the pressure, heat and abrasion very well. The ...

Re: Sump Plug Stuck
I would try drilling with the left handed drill bit as they are usually pretty good. I have a number of old motorcycles (although the more recent 70/80s stuff are the worst offenders for stuck fasteners) and the left handed drill bits have got me out of trouble a couple of times. Great things. If t...

Re: Sump Plug Stuck
I also have another option - after discussing this problem with an engineering friend of mine (he works on power stations and ships - dealing with similar specialist problems but on a much larger scale), he suggested that a quicker and cleaner approach is to drill a larger hole (left hand drill bit,...

Re: Sump Plug Stuck
Or use an oil pump to get oil out? Never worry about stripped threads again. I got one this year and won't be crawling around under engines again, brilliant. What type is it? I remember reading that they were not so good at picking up the sludge and would always leave behind more old oil than drain...

Sump Plug Stuck
I have a recently acquired 1981 Aircooled T3 and whilst I was servicing it yesterday I discovered I had a sump plug that was more rounded off stump than hex head plug. The PO had obviously made an unsuccessful effort to remove it using mole grips. I'm now left with a problem slightly different to th...

Aircooled Engine Tinware Seal
I have recently acquired a 1981 2.0l air-cooled T3. I have previously owned a couple of 2.0l T2s (now eyewateringly expensive). The engine seal on mine doesn't go all the way round. It appears to be in good condition but there's an 18" - 22" missing section at the rear. It also has a rubbe...

I wouldn't waste my time with T Cut to remove overspray. Farecla G3 is the stuff to use.

Re: Space under front seats a Uk alternative ?
My van just has a bog standard home safe (about the size of a loaf of bread) bolted in the space under the passenger seat.
I'm away with work at the moment but I'll try to find the maker and get a picture on Friday.
