head gasket/cooling issues 1.6cs

Post by matt brighton »

Hi

1982 ..1 .6cs diesel - cooling issues and any advice gratefully recieved.....

For the second time in 2 weeks I have popped the coolant hose in the engine bay that connects the front to back pipe (the one from the "top" of the thermostat housing) to the plastic pipe to the rad. It is forced off and dumps the coolant :(

Have reconnected it again today ...and put the jubliee clip on the metal joint before the olive rather than on the plastic pipe -= which seems to make sense to me.

I intend to flush the rad tonightby running a hose through both pipes to and from it - to see if its a blocked radiator - if it happens again remove the thermostat to see if thats faulty.

The in pipe at the rad end of the system never seem to get hot.... Guess that may be a clue ?

But both pipes get toasty warm (to and from the rad) in the engine bay for a couple of feet

No oli in water or vice versa

Any tips on tracing the problem would be very welcome

Thanks !

WHS ^^^^^^

My engine was playing silly beggars - the thermostat wasn't opening fully so didn't get the full flow to the rad. Change the thermostat is the first thing that I would do.

Thanks tokev the rev and oldie but goodie for previous advice gratefully recieved.

Slowly running out of cheaper fixes -new thermostat/pressure cap - endless bleeding of the system

regret to consider that poss head gasket replacement is almost on the radar :( - if my efforts this evening to purge the system of air properly and the new stst and cap cant keep the water in the system

Happy to undertake the job myself as have done a head gasket on an xj6 in past as well as other motors but cant find a step by step guide for my van.

Local garage that specailises quoted £350 to change head gasket as well as cam belt assuming the head is in ok condition

Does the bently manual detail this operation for a 1.6cs and if so can i beg/steal/borrow that section in any format (cd/pdf/photocopy) from a kindly member ? ?

I did hear on earlier threads that there may be a market in "sharing" the aforementioned bently publication

Hope i am not speaking out of turn

just a thought, you could kill two birds with one stone here and upgrade to a more popular engine (more spares)
with an added benefit of a simple engine swap
I am talking about a swap to a 1Y engine

Thanks Kev _ thats a good idea :ok that is something I would really love to do as the 1.6 is soooo slow but worried about the cost ..... ?

i will have a study of the engine swap section to see whats involved

Thanks again for the advice
