Gearbox oil leak by CV joint

Post by djhammy »

HI guys had a recon gearbox fitted on Friday. I drove it home fine but have gone out now to find a small puddle of what i assume is gearbox oil dripping down to the bottom of the gear box and onto the path. Looks like its coming from where the cv joint/shaft goes into the box.

I guess i'll have to have it towed back to the garage to have it looked at but god i'll be peed off it i have to spend out on having it removed and sent back. I assume this is bad news.

Cheers Dave

either they didn't bother to replace the seal or missed out or damaged the o ring or the flange is scored and they didn't speedisleeve it - probably swapped the flanges over because they didn't mark them so now the scored nearside flange is on the offside - not one of mine I hope

HI Aiden many thanks for the advice I really wanted to get mine to you for a rebuild but needed it done urgently due to work demands.

Its been a nightmare week the 1st re-con was the correct gearbox for my year and model but the guys at the garage could see the imput was in the wrong place. Who every had the van before me pre 97 had modified it and put a gearbox for a Aircooled 2 ltr in. I guess the garage i bought it off may have done this.

So they sent down the older version which fitted fine but then this. So far 4 loads of delivery charges.

Dave

Looks like a leaking half shaft seal. Have been told to drive no ore than 100 miles to see if it beds in? Funny how people who couldn't do enough before you purchase an item become frosty and blunt when it goes wrong.

Classic example of why you should only go to the best I'm afraid.

yep alas Aiden couldn't book in until March and i couldn't risk not having a van off road as its my only work vehicle. planned it all to perfection to be off road for 2 days only lol. certainly wasn't a cheap option and a reputable long standing well known and advertised company in all the VW mags.

You touch it and you invalidate your warranty ! The company need to be consulted and they need to be given the opportunity to rectify the situation .... even if they pay for a hire car so you don't exaserpate the situation if this is your only vehicle.

HI Ian they didn't even offer to pay for the extra work even though it was a damaged seal that was in the gearbox as supplied. Cost me another £30 for my mechanic to swap over though did manage to get a seal sent FOC. Luckily it did the trick but left with a very bitter taste with the whole experience.

If i dealt with my clients like this i'd be out of business.

Any way now i need to replace some of the gear linkage parts and wondered what you guys thought about the quality of this kit. Great price compared to buying individually but as always worried about quality?
