Cost of welds

Post by aulday »

Alreet mehts

I need some welding done:

both driver and passenger side foot steps I can see the ground from, lifting the plastic up it's all fooked underneath

2 holes at the bottom of the bodywork, one at the bottom of the pillar, left of the fuel filler. And one near the rear jacking point on the passenger side. Both about 2 square inches.

Any idea what I'm looking at in cost, and what preps I need to make before taking it for welding?

many thanks :)

I'm going to learn to do it myself as it'll be more fun and work out cheaper in the long run

will one of these suffice?

Are there any specifications I need to adhere to in order to get the job done. This is the cheapest glassless mig I found on bee bay.

thanks

right. and there was something to do with the type of reel you use if I remember? like get the stuff that has decent flux already in it is that right?

so you have gas, which isn't as good as MIG, which is gas and electric?

sorry this is a new trade to me.

That mig looks ok for the money.
When i was refering to staying away from gas i meant get a gas mig, Gasless is ok if needed but isnt as easy to control and is a lot messier than mig welding with gas.
For more info see http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
That will explain it better. :ok

thanks for the input mehts. I think for the money it's going to be worth buying a welder plus gives me another toy and thing to learn

well can I suggest you practice on something other than your van. I've just had the off side sill done, both tops of the wheel arches and my exaust. Total cost for totally skilled time served welder 300quid. Worth every penny. I asked him the same questions you've asked and he advised I spend some months training before I tackled the van. Too much time, so I paid and would pay again. No doubts will pay again as we live near the sea

Yeah I've had a re-think. I'm generally quite dab'anded, but I really don't have a lot of time on my hands. My dads done MIG enough before though so there is that help.

But I'm wanting to sort this out soon and I don't have many free hours so it'll probably be a paid job this time round.

I'll post the pics I took when I get on the right computer, then when I have a ball-park figure I'll go hunting for a good welder

I toyed with the idea of learning to weld then ended up paying. I get around 6 hours for £100, but I dropped on this bloke as he's quite cheap. Will maybe tackle something smaller for my first project. Good luck with yours :ok Jon.
