Nothing in wiki, and Haynes just shows a pair of old pliers squishing the inch-long spring which gets captured by that pin and the retainer-cap----- now I know why I've left this job alone since last did it about 11 years ago! !
Does anyone PLEASE have any hints or tips ? Has anyone invented a spesh tool for the job?
Sorry, I read it to read 'return springs'. I use a pair of waterpump pliers .. Mine have a button so they can be set at a certain minimum size which prevents the cap slipping out.

yep i used those when i done mine. held pin in from back with finger, hold the cap with the pliers , compress the spring with cap and twist when over the pin
get a normal large pair of pliers and hold the clip end on , then pin in hole, hold with pinky , rest spring over said pin then should have said to orientate pin so the leg bit is say 12 ocklock-6 o'c then knowing this push retainer over it and turn a touch , dead easy after youve done it once,

If you have got a weak pinky (or its minus 5 on a Febuary evening and you cant feel anything) then find a piece of wood that you can use two pinkys to hold it with.
