How much water should get in through the rear vents?

Post by Zebedee »

Its been raining pretty much for a week now in cumbria and theres been about an inch of water in the bottom of the snorkel box every day. :(
Why didn't VW make the vents so they sloped the other way as the water just pours off the gutted straight down the vents?
Also why didn't they think of putting a drain hole in the bottom apart from that stupid hole that allows the rear chassis to rot out by filling it with water?

If you want to stop the water getting in when the van is sat parked days on end (especially during the winter), just buy some magnetic sheet plastic from a local company that does signs. Slap it over the vents ........just remember to take em off when you drive off, I've forgotten on a couple of occassions and they stayed put (apart from some rat who nicked my first set)......... :D

I've already repaired a couple of rust holes in there so it's 100% solid but I'd now like to keep it that way.
It's used as my daily driver but has been sat around for the past week while I've been doing some bodywork and fitting LPG.
Does the cable tie trick really work to stop water ingress of is it just for stopping the dripping?

The water flows down the vents and goes to the the rear corner, thats where it enters the cavity, it does work. I never noticed mine wet in there since I did it, which reminds me I must do it to the new one. next time its raining put a coat on and go and look, it will explain itself.
It might not stop every drop of water going in there, but it deffinitely stops it forming puddles which dont dry out quickly.

Will get to work with the cable ties when i find them and see how it goes. I'm gonna drill a hole in the middle of each panel too to let any water out that does get in.
