GEARBOX FILLER PLUG LOCATION?

Post by Smudger38 »

Hi all. I am about to change my Gearbox oil & bought the stuff from Wilko's. I do however have an issue as I am not too good with mechanics, and have checked the Haynes manual & the Wiki but unsure of the location of the filler plug! My engine - a 1.7D (KY) has a plastic plug which I think is where you fill it? It appears to be bone dry inside, so I guess has never been changed or topped up which would explain the gear select problems. The plug in question is to the rear right of the engine bay & to the left of the 2 large hoses attached to the plasic pipes - please could someone confirm this is indeed where I fill it up? Sorry but the site wil not let me upload a pic as it states the the 'board attachment quota has been reached''? Thanks.

Stick your finger in, oil should be roughly level with bottom of filler hole. Might as well drain it all out and fill with new, as your there

DON'T PUT IT IN THERE!!!!!! - it sounds like you are talking about the timing hole in the bell housing - you will soak your clutch in oil if you put it there. It's on the side of the gearbox under the van.

did wonder when he mentioned plastic plug, but quote above is a pretty good description, can't see many people pouring it into flywheel

You can't access the filler point from in the engine bay. The filler is on the gearbox itself and has two hex (17mm I Think) plugs in there. To fill it you will need a hose conected to a funnel through the rear wheel
arch. Before you have ago, try and undo the top one first (filler) because if this one is stuck you won't be able to fill it without taking the gearbox out after you have drained the old oil out.

Hope this helps

Check that you can get the filler plug out before you drain it - otherwise you could end up with no oil in it and no way of filling it.
A 17mm hex is needed and a lot of brute force to undo it usually. It is difficult to see and access - easier if you have it up on ramps. If I had seen this earlier I could have taken a photo as I have been under mine for the last 2 days and have just finished and put everything away.

Ps. The one you where thinking of is to see the notch on the flu wheel to set your engine at TDC (top dead center, it should line up with your fuel pump pin and the cam)

sorry about the text I am posting from my iPhone
