Does anyone know the history of our Syncro?

Post by PetenAli »

We are still pretty new to the forum so thought it was time to share our T3 with some not very good pics. We'd also be really chuffed to learn a bit of history if anyone knows of it. We've realised that when a Syncro comes up for sale they are often known to the cogniscenti on the 80 90 Syncro forum.

We bought it last year from Syncrospares. It has had a major resto. Apparently the Viponds bought it when it was in the point of being scrapped and broken for parts. They then decided it was too good to break and seem to have done a pretty good job of the resto.

It was originally registered in Belgium and has a second ID plate above the right hand front wheel arch next to the passenger seat.

The previous owner came from Pulborough and may even be on this forum.

So far we have been pretty pleased considering it is 24 years old. It performed very well in the snow. There have been one or two issues with the 4wd but hopefully these are sorted. Only major problem was a month ago when we lost drive. Turned out to be a CV joint that had come unbolted and mullered itself. I've replaced the CV with a Brickwerx HD one although I am still regularly checking the bolts with a torque wrench.

The plan is to enjoy it this summer and then look at alternative engine options over the winter. At present I have driven Rollercoaster's EJ22 Syncro and that was a revelation. I'm looking to to try an MTdi as well as they seem to get a good press - I've had a good look at the Wiki and various forums so its going to be a tough decision. Its very definately a keeper so we want to make sure we get this right.

Any info on the history gratefully received.

PS This is also my first go at uploading pics via Photobucket - I hope they have worked and that I haven't used too much space etc

I'd noticed the closeness of the registration when I'd seen yours on Campervan Culture! Did yours start life in Belgium or does this just mean that they were registered close together?

Thanks for the comments both.

not necessarily at the same time, they keep the numbers in original registration date order so they were both originally registered in their original countries in the same month and so they have age related uk plates in the same sequence, and were registered in the uk at the same dvla office; Edna is 152, Manchester DVLA, July 1988 original reg and I've seen both 153 and 154, both T3's and 153 was imported about 5 months after I brought Edna into the country

Its got a brown interior but currently there is a 2.1 DJ in the back. That in itself is interesting as the engine number has been ground off! Stupidly I didn't pick this up until we got it home. I was more bothered about how sound the engine was.

There is a vinyl covering on the floor...

but this pic is from before the covering went down and no runners. When I checked out the Westfailia website it made me think that it might not actually be an original Westy - not least because the VIN doesn't check out.

Thanks though.

Could be a converted caravelle judging by the electric mirrors and central locking. The handle on the door on the fridge is in an interesting place too I think. Any pictures of the opening in the roof that will tell you if its a fake, though I did notice the conversion plate is missing and with grey door cards and brown interior, its been messed with. The table in the back is actually the small table from the front.

What website's that then? I didn't think westfalia had a record of vans they converted? Link would be good if you have the website :ok

Yes - these are all things that I've sussed since we made the purchase. It has the electric mirrors tho' not central locking. I'm actually looking for truck mirrors (missed a pair on flea bay on sun night). I've seen the fridge handle in the top corner in a few pics altho' more commonly its in the middle like yours. It does have the full length shelf over the cooker. The window glass is all genuine by the etchings which I guess would support your Caravelle theory - how will the roof opening tell if its a fake? Let me know and I will take some pics and post them.

Thanks again,

Pete

Ah, ok. I know that site, i thought you found a list of chassis numbers from westfalia :)
I wouldn't get to hung up on whether it's a genuine westy or not. The worst it is is a caravelle with a westy interior, which is still blooming good. Suppose it comes down to whether you bought it as a westy or not.
Pop top is easy to tell if it's the westfalia roof pressings, the opening into roof will look factory finished. Be easier to have two side by side to compare
Glad your enjoying the rack, should have kept it
