tappet setting Aircooled cu engine?

First of all do a i set them cold as in older cooled engines, i think someone on her suggested getting the engine semi hot to boost the hydrolic tappets.

what gap do i set to?
how do i know if hydro tappets are good or knackered .
can they be bled if so how?

hi,
as far as i know there is no gap with these tappets, you just back the adjuster screw off so its just making contact with the top of the valve with the engine in the correct position ,then turn it back in 1&1/2 to 2 turns back in. then lock it off an away you go.

You can adjust them hot - unlike older solid lifters. Hot should ensure that they are properly pumped up with oil. Then back off till there is clearance, then contact plus 1 turn. There are lots of different opinions on this. Do a search and you will find a variety suggesting between half a turn and the original VW factory 2 turns, which is reputed to have been modified to 1 turn. As for bleeding?... well that's another can of worms!
