Welding...
Hi all
I just bought a lovely blue and white watercooled tintop, its been great so far very reliable and lots of fun. But it is going to need some welding soon in a few places, footwells etc. I am thinking of having a go at this myself as I can't find any one in London to do it! Does anyone have any tips or advice, or probably better still does anyone know of a welder that would take the job on? I'm based in South London but will go anywhere to get it done.
Thanks

Re: Welding...
DEFINITELY do this yourself if you have time and patience -- it will cost you far less money , but most important of all, you will know it's all good and proper on completion, no rusty bits left in or primer paint missed out etc .
You know it makes sense.

Re: Welding...
Yes by all means have a go yourself but only if your confident that your welding skills are up to scratch. i am a qualified welder and i have seen some terrible welding attempts that were down right dangerous, if in doubt get someone skilled to do it for you.

Re: Welding...
Just got a load of welding done at Wesgate Motors in Hackney. One doorstep, entire front arch (genuine VW), whole rear arch, both battery trays repaired, Passenger front arch patched up where seatbelt fits all seam sealed, 2 coats of primer and about an inch of under body seal for £400, although I supplied the new panels. The work was less than he quoted so he tuned my choke and carb and quieted by tappets while he was waiting for stuff to dry!
Not VW, but just proper mechanics.

I do bits and bobs, depends on what you need doing, when you need it doing and where abouts you are. If its not too much work i could come to you and do it. If its anything over a days work i'd have it over here to do.

Give it a go yourself. Do a college course which will help you and give you confidence.

Re: Welding...
Hi all, thanks do much for all your helpful replies!
I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply to these but I didn't know they were here! Just looked now and and really grateful. Unfortunately the van that need the welding has been hit by a drunk driver and written off
it has been a bit of a nightmare but we have managed to buy a 1990 Caravelle and I spent all of last weekend transferring the lovely interior from the write off into the new one (Sid).
The new van has the same problems with the footwells so will be taking your advice onboard for this van. It's also going to need a respray soon so if anyone can recommed a reputable bodyshop in London or the South of England it would be much appreciated. I'm fed up with bodyshops hanging up on me when they find out it's an old VW!
Thanks again all.

Practice a bit first and invest in an auto-darkening helmet as they're great. The type you hold are annoying as it doesn't leave any hands free. I was given a MIG which seems to weld nicely now we have it set up right.

Re: Welding...
Nice job Covkid! very neat.
I really want to try it myself but I think lack of time and lack of space will force me to seek professional help!
