primary handbrakecable!!!!!!!!!!

Post by Dave W »

Trying to source a new replacement primary handbrake cable (the one that goes from the lever to the balance bar above the petrol tank), my local agent, just kampers and GSF dont seem to do them any more.
Has anyone any idea of where to obtain a new replacement cable, thanks.

You are not going to get one 'just like that' as Eric Morecambe used to say.......

YOUR options are to find a useable 2 nd hand one/ fix the one you have, OR wait till someone finds a similar cable that can be adapted to replace the origonal item.
( usually taken from another model)

They are obsolete from VW
GSF no longer sell them.
The people who made them for VW, and the aftermarket have lost their supply of the small plastic guide that fits the cable, so basically no one makes them as they can't buy in this guide
However, I have one away for copying at the moment, you will have to remove the plastic guide and rubber boot from your old cable and fit them to your new one but they should be along fairly soon hopefully.
it's a known issue, hopefully I should have a long term solution.

Thanks guy`s, have now welded a threaded bar to the end that has rotted away!!!!!!!!. I can now adjust it at the balance bar now. The metal cable (the bit you cant see on top of the tank) looks like it will last a little longer.
The tank however wouldnt and neither the clutch cable, all now been replaced. The unions on the plastic pipe to the slave cylinder (plastic pipe and unions again obselete so i`ve been told) rotted away had a nightmare trying to obtain replacements, ended up having to use a flexible pipe from an earlier model.
Typical you start one job and more and more little!!???!! jobs crop up on the way!!!!!.
BTW anyone know if the plastic pipe and the unions attached to the slave cylinder are available from anywhere.
Please put me down for a new handbrake cable Simon when they arrive.
