Fitting a child seat to the rear seat of a Westy California

Post by Mr Soft »

The wife is due in June & I am starting to prepare for the new arrival.I have an '89 Westy California & was wondering if it is possible to fit child seat bases to lap belts, or whether I need to upgrade the belts to a 3 point inertier belt. If the later is the option I need, could anyone suggest a suitable garage to carry out the work?

We have one of these but it's only good from about 9 months, you will need a 3 point belt for the rear facing baby seat they have to go in at first. Or just let the baby travel in the front, and one of you go in the back? We are fitting a 3 point belt this summer cos 4 year old needs one for booster seat. May as well do it now 'cos you'll have to eventually. There's stuff on the Wiki here to do it yourself.

For our new born (4 months now :) ) i use the maxi cosi cabrio with easy fix base.

A seat belt has to be bloody long to get around the rear facing seat - so the 3 point belt kit i got from brickwerks was not long enough (i had to get the easy fix base). I mostly put her in the front TBH.

Theres news on that kit.

I have found another supplier that does an even longer belt, it's fuppin massive, but alas it's considerably more expensive.
I have the trial belt at the workshop, once I get a van in to try it then I will start selling them.

We personally have a MaxiCosi base thing, the 3 point belt that I sell fits that, it also fits forward facing seats, it just seems to be the brands of rear facer that have the belt that go around the outside, or thats what I can gather from the few bits of feedback I've recieved.

Mind you, our MaxiCosi base works perfectly well with the lap belt also.

You can get a sideways baby seat now too, think it's called a Jane. My mate has one and it's amazing, baby gets to lie totally flat, or it can sit up a bit, and a normal length belt fits round it. Bit pricey but really good.

Good news about the longer belt. I will have to have chat with you when it's available.

The maxi cosi easy base is so good we leave it in the wives car so she doesn't have to mess around with seat belts every time. I initially bought it for the van with a lapbelt but a lot of the time I can't be asses to get it out her car!

we had a graco travel system when summer was first born. its a pram with car seat and base thing included in the package. we used the seat base in our (then) front midle seat which had a lap belt. works like the maxi cosi bases i think. you just slot the rear facing babyseat into the base and away you go. Plan on using it again with the lap belt in the back of the van for no 2. Summer currently uses a britax eclipse car seat which is the next stage up and also uses a lap belt too. Hope that helps.

Hi Again!

happy new year to ya!

Have looked a little deeper into this & as kathyshack says, the Graco seat base can be retained by the lap belt, thus the seat just clips in & out, no messing with the seat belt around the baby seat itself!

Happy Camping

Does a 3 point belt need to be the rachetting type or can you use one that locks only in an emergency stop? The reason I ask is that both my Volvo V40 estate and my VW Camper have inertial 3 point belts at the back, but the belt just pulls out all the way unless you jerk them hard.

Thanks
