Weight of an empty calor gas 4.5 kg Butane bottle needed?

Post by campervankatie »

Hi Im trying to work out how much gas I have left in my gas bottle. From memory I think it was 24llbs full. Does anyone know the weight of an empty calor gas 4.5 kg Butane bottle (blue)so i can work out how much I have left. I have one of those regulators that change colour according to amount of gas, but it doesnt sem that good.
Thanks, Katie

Katie, thanks for reminding me that I need to replace my spare 4.5Kg Butane Bottle which is empty. If I remember I will stick the empty bottle on the bathroom scales before I buy a refill. :)

I have one of those Gaslow (green/amber/red) gauges & it isn't really much good. My gauge was reading green & within 5 minutes the grill in my camper was struggling & the gas ran out. It didn't give any warning that the gas was about to run out. :(

Think i've found the answer

According to the calor website the empy weight of the bottle is printed on the aluminium collar on the gas bottle in pounds and ounces. I have 3 bottles and each shows a different weight on the collar which confuses me a little. I'll take the one i think is lightest to be refilled, empty it completely and then weight it. As you can see this is annoying me so much I have gone nerdy on it.

I have just been to my garage to get my empty Calor Gas bottle & it is a 5Kg Butane one, as opposed to the usual 4.5Kg ones. It weighs 6Kg on the bathroom scales.

The metal collar does not state any weight. The words/Nos ''Test Code J22'' appears twice as does ''12 10'' which I assume is the next test date ie. December 2010.

the weight of the EMPTY vessel will be stamped on the bottle...

if you then weigh the bottle, and convert into KG that value, you
can work out the % full. there is always more in them than you think!

12 10 stamping is empty bottle weight.

12 lb 10 oz is 5.7386 kilo. Your bottle weight of 6 kilo bottle is 13.2 lb.. 13 lb 2 oz - 12 lb 10 oz bottle weight on tag means bottle = 9.2 oz, so should have that much gas left in bottle... 5 kilo of gas plus 5.7386 kilo bottle = 10.7386 kilo which is what a full bottle should weight or 23 lb 10 oz.

When you are using gas and pressure / flame drops at near empty tank, there is still a little gas left in the tank. That's why it weights a little more then tag says.

Use propane bottles in ours and have found this kind of calculation to be accurate.

Lloyd, thanks for the info/calculations. :)

H.M. The bottle I swapped was a 5kg one with 12.10 on the collar. The replacement is the standard 4.5kg bottle & it has 14.10 on the collar.

We ended up with the same calculations, I also weighed my empty and full bottles on the house scales - they matched too.

Does anyone use 7kg calor gas bottles - I saw these and wondered about the pros and cons of them versus 4.5kg bottles?

I found the cheapest place to get refil 4.5kg calor gas Butane was Go Outdoors at £11.70. The larger 7kg are £15.30. This was August 2008. Not sure if this is the sort of thing you want on the Wiki section?

Thanks james and katie, have updated wiki and also now included a table of Butane and Propane gas properties.

Any more 'Gas Safety' info welcomed!

We use the 6kg Calor propane bottle instead of the 4.5kg. Isn't easy to get into place, but does fit.
