MPG on LPG?

Post by dugdog »

What MPG are you getting out of your gas converted T25 - I'm thinking of buying an already converted T25.

It's a 1.9 engine and I think I'm getting about 15MPG out of it -

(Did 110 miles on £16 worth of Gas - at 51p per litre)...

(which I think works out about 15p a mile? - any help with the maths gratefully received). I think I've got my maths right... let's say an older family car might do about 40MPG - with current petrol prices, that's 13p / mile... so all the advantage of a camper at only a fraction more of the running cost...

Hope I've got the maths right... any thoughts?

so what's your MPG ?

cheers

cheers kevtherev - sounds like i'm ok then... maybe it needs tuning - I'm a total VW virgin, but i've had it checked out and it seems pretty together - the mechanic guy says it's had all the pipework done (apparently the water circulation can rot out?) and the head looks good... only a little rust to deal with...

guess i'll be back with all sorts of questions....

thanks again

Dugdog,

1.9DG 1990/1 - HI Top
I have been keeping records since got van. We were getting 22 ishmpg (didn't really run on petrol long enough to be sure!) ave to gallon on Petrol

Over the last 7000 miles on gas (inc getting the powervalve just right) I have the followingf igs:

On LPG our overall average has been 19mpg with a best tank of 22 and a worst of about 16.

I always fill to the click on LPG (although I have to account for the Leisure Gas tank being topped up each time)

From the forum I think the individual tank figs are less relevant due to Filling Pressure/temperature at the filling station but my ongoing average is probably as accurate as I will get.

I would humbly suggest that those figures are right at the VERY top of what you'll ever hear of people getting ..... I nearly typed the word 'fiction' but that would've been naughty of me

Firstly, anyone is welcome to test drive, secondly it is set up for warm starts on LPG which means that the idle bleed screw is fully closed and I am switching to LPG when the engine is at its optimum efficiency and the choke fully open (the latter contributes to an improved mpg alone). The overall lpg economy has to be balanced by the fact I have to start on petrol but with a 36ltr lpg tank economy and range were more important than cold starting. Finally, I get 27+ mpg on petrol (though that figure is slightly lower following the installation of the lpg mixer on top of the Pierburg) which is probably due to my driving style and nothing else. Most lpg conversions I have seen utilise the OMVL R90 vapouriser which is substantially larger than the Autronic that I have installed and was recommended where economy is more important than power.

 kinell mate  ..... I'll settle for 16.5 mpg on gas ... life's just too short :(

Thread asked a specific question - MPG on LPG?, I answered it and, for the sceptical, explained why my consumption is better than others. You may be happy with 15.5 mpg but I certainly wouldn't given the predictions for fuel prices by the end of the year.

surely it would be cheaper to run it on lpg from the start , rather than petrol :? , sounds like a load of messing about to me , and i'd forget and leave it on petrol

i get loads more mpg when i'm in Norfolk , less hills , traffic lights , traffic etc

roughly i get about 16 round Sheffield and about 20 on a run , starting and stopping on lpg
