One of the hoses in my coolant system has perished and needs replacing. There's a temporary fix on the persihed section at the moment, but it won't hold out forever.
Sadly I know *nuffink* about engines and the like, so I have no idea how to go about finding and fitting a replacement. Can anyone give me a few tips please?
The hose in question runs from the expansion tank towards the fan belt, and is indicated by the red arrow in the photo below:
have u looked at sites like just kampers or gsf to see which coolant pipes they have available for your model and for how much?
might then be useful to check on the wiki (font of all knowledge) on this site - little hammer icon on top of the page - on coolants and how to bleeed the system - as you may lose coolant when changing a pipe -
a haynes handbook for your vehicle which will tell you how your coolant system works and offer you maps n photos to familiarise yourself w your own vehicle will be a good investment -
Owner of a red T25 fixed hi top campervan - colour - spikey red - petrol - water cooled - 1.9 dg engine rhd - 1990 g reg n still going strong!-
Thanks edoh. I have looked at the wiki, but it didn't really give me the info I'm after. It's a bit confusing for the non technically minded...
I do need to get hold of a Haynes Manual, but they don't seem to do them for diesel models like mine (1986 water-cooled diesel 1.6 TD). Closest I can find is one for the petrol model, which I guess will do?
Whereabouts are you and is there a VW dealer or GSF branch near you? If so, pay them a visit and tell them what year your van is (maybe go prepared with your engine number as well) and ask them to look for the hose that you need on the computer. You could also try having a look at the vagcat website. If you manage to get the hose that you need, maybe the repair job that is in place at the moment will hold out till the next 80-90 techy weekend?
I don't know anything about the different types of diesel engines but I'll try to find the relevant section of Wiki or Brickwerks and post a link.

E D I T: just noticed that the Bentley manual is cheaper in the Just Kampers link that edoh has already posted
Looking for: window apertures for side windows, at the back of the van

Thanks guys! That Bentley manual is monstrously expensive, innit?! Might search on Ebay. I think I need to identify what hose it is before i go looking for a replacement one....

You can do both things at the same time: go into a VW dealer parts dept and tell them you've got a type 2 van, the year it was registered and what your engine number is, they'll get the exploded diagram of the cooling system up on the computer screen and you point to the hose that you need. They write down the part number and tell you the price. They get it in a couple of days later but forget to ring you to say they've got it sitting on the shelf, ready for you to collect!

http://www.vagcat.com/ there should be a illistration on there site but you need to register. I managed to make a good repair on a engine hose by going to halfords .There is a selection of ribbed hoses in there stock. In the picture the hose that is near the white fuel filter on yours on mine had split .On mine i was able to graft in a length of halfords stock suitable sized ribbed hose .It took a bit of effort and it may sound like a bodge but its done aprox 8000 miles since and have no problems.
