I have read many of the threads and am now more confused than when I started so please bear with me. :(

Following my recent distributor thread (photos and discussion here https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19564) where it was agreed I should have a vacuum advance can on it I have now got one fitted. I realise my set up is unlikely to be correct but I took the chance to start the van and once I remembered to connect ALL the wires it started and ran very cleanly. I then tried to move forwards up the hill I have to park on and this proved to be nearly impossible. The moment I started raising the clutch to put a bit of load on, the engine died so I have decided I was taking too much of a risk driving it and know I need it sorted.

I have been promised the loan of a timing gun from work but I'm not convinced it will arrive. Others say "I never used one of them, I always did it like this...."

Can you point me to step by step instructions and advise whether I need to push more for the loan of the gun or not.

This is for a 1,9l watercooled with carburettors and I now know its a DG engine. :D

You need a strobe to do it properly.

Just on the offchance and from a recent experience you could check fuel filter and fuel delivery.....

A van with the same problem had a blocked filter...

I`m no expert at this :roll: :roll:

fuel is OK - I checked that first.

The strobe has actually arrived!

I had already checked that on the wiki but was confused. I read it is how to time a DH or a DG with injection. Does it apply to a DG with carbs too?

I'll check the wiki, but it should read correctly..
Its no different really..

Get a haynes manual.....

With it running and at normal idle (ie warm) unplug the vac hose on the advance unit (block the hose so no vac leak)
turn distributor to get the 5 deg on the pulley, timing mark should line up with the case half.

Wiki has procedure for the vac advance and retard units, DG shouldnt have this on. Wiki needs updating....
