Squeaking driving us nuts

Post by brianjbox »

Hi all

Had the bus a couple of years now and in that time the bus always squeaked a little over bumpy uneven surfaces, I assumed if it was serious that the fault would be picked up in the MOT but it never was.

Now the squeaking has got really bad and only stops on dead flat surfaces of which there aren't many round here, there's no grinding, banging, pulling or anything, just this infernal squeaking when the bus bounces up and down.

Does anyone know which bit of the suspension/steering system needs replacing, funds are a little low at present so could really do with getting it right first go.

Many thanks
Brian.

P.S. it's basically a 89 converted panel van.

Many thanks for a speedy reply and link :D

I'll give that a try tomorrow [well it won't cost nowt to try  ]

My ears still ache from that squeaking today, think I'll adjust the spare wheel position as that has been moved recently [puncture :( ] and I might have over tightened the tray

Cheers.

Brian

Sometimes its the spare wheel's tyre rubbing on the cage that makes a squeeking noise, more likely the wishbone bushes though.

I had a squeak from my van which turned out to be the 'cone' rubbers on the front tie bars. I slackened off the rubbers enough to smear the parts of them that contact the brackets and behind the washers with 'rubber grease' ( measure the length of the thread sticking through each side front - you don't need to touch the back nuts - so you can refit without mucking up any settings)...sorted!

I think a silicone grease would do just as well. Just be sure the grease will not adversely affect the rubbers though.

Just wondering how you got on with fixing this Brian because we've got one of those! Did you manage to fix it and if so, was it a difficult job?

Cheers :)

Oops! I should've read all of the linked post before posting that! Grinding and welding . . . will have to wait until we can afford to ask a garage to do that!

Front inside wishbone bushes

Post by trundletruc »

The squeaking will probably be the inside top wishbone buses if it appears to be coming from under the front seats.

Mine did it after replacing them! I sprayed some silicone lubricant on them and the noise went away. Comes back a bit in very dry weather, no problems this year!

Check to see if there is any play in these bushes before you go ahead and replace them.
