Eberspacher Heaters - petrol vs diesel

Looking at Eberspacher heaters to have the van ready for winter camping/living (new job means I may actually be living in it for a bit).

Seems most Eberspacher heaters around are diesel. My van is petrol. Can I fit a diesel heater to a petrol van and just add an extra fuel tank. Apart from the inconvenience of having to maintain separate fuel supplies are there any other strong reasons not to do it?


If I'm honest I'd rather opt for the petrol in line with my van's fuel, but would like to know in case I can't source a good petrol heater.

The B4 is the petrol model, you should be able to source one as easy it's diesel equivalent I'd have thought, as it's still in production - looks like it's about £5 more...

I've thought about going the separate tank route (diesel or gas) before I saw this heater, but I'm now just going to keep things simple and fit one for the existing fuel supply!

Now that's an idea (Shock horror, but I actually have no spare wheel, van didn't come with one and I've been toting cans of tireweld in case of emergency!)

Is the fuel can directly connected to the heater? Do you have an idea of the rate of consumption (e.g. Litres/hour)? I guess my main concern is the potential hassle of running out, whereas if the main fuel tank is the source for the heater then that's much less likely.

Also, where is your heater unit installed? Do they usually go in engine bay?

My D1LC is fitted under the glove box.Dont worry a fuel can full will last for ages.Theres a picture of my heater on this thread.

4Kw is a bit strong for our vans - you will be running it a low heat output for the majority of the time which can lead to premature coking. The best size for our vans is 2 - 3Kw then you can run them at full heat for all the time.
Unfortunately (fortunately for me ) Eberspächer do not make one this small any longer so the only choice is the Webasto Airtop 2000 (2Kw) or the older 3.2Kw (HL32 and Airtop32).


Consumption figures for Webastos:
Airtop 2000
Fuel consumption: through control range: 0.1 .. 0.2 kg/h (0.16 .. 0.27 l/h)PETROL, 0.1 .. 0.21 kg/h (0.12 .. 0.24 l/h)DIESEL.
HL24/32/Airtop32
HL24 B first, HL24D, HL32B, HL32D.



Mounting position is easiest where the factory fitted ones are as there is a nice clear access underneath. (Anywhere your ingenuity can fit it safely though.)

A few years ago there were lots of D2 heaters on eBay from old BT vans. I bought one but sold it as I needed the money for other things during the recession, like food. Wouldn't mind getting another one but I suspect the prices have gone up.
