Locks for rear door and sliding door
Hi, the locks for the rear door and sliding door for our 1990 T25 are somewhere between temperamental and not working, our local locksmith said that we should be able to order a a new lock "kit" which the locksmith could then get our existing keys to operate, has anyone done this before. Alternative seems to be to buy old locks for circa £40-50 and have separate keys for eack lock. Thoughts appreciated.

Our van came without a sliding door handle so we had one of these fitted. You'll probably need the later version though (post '85..). We also had to get a grommet fitted (https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/ ... early.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) to keep the handle from wobbling about.

It means another key, but in practice I just open the passenger door and reach through to unlock from the inside.

Some info here.https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Bo ... oors_locks
First job should be to see if you can fix your existing locks.
I'm not sure if "New" locks are available, though I think the tumblers are, always worth checking VW van centers.
Have a search, Someone on here was offering to cut keys from lock numbers.

You're right, I wasn't being clear, it's the tumblers in the sliding door that just doesn't work, if you put anything flat through the key slit anything could turn it. It locks and unlocks, but anything that you put in the key slit turns it. The back door lock is just temperamental, sometimes it works first time, other times you can spend 5 minutes wiggling it around before it works.
The locksmith seemed to think I could order a new lock cylinder kit (presume from VW), put it together and he'd be able to fit it and match the lock so it would work with our existing keys. I'd never heard of this but wanted to check to see if anyone else had done this.

If anything flat turns the lock it could be that the whole handle needs replacing, as the slot that the lock tumblers run in can become damaged or worn.

Sadly I have to agree with that. Its not just the barrel that wears but also the lock housing. Recently had to replace both front door handles for the same reason.

Just read my last post back....
I think I should clarify my "Look yourself" comment.
I didnt mean not to ask questions or seek advice. I ment take the lock apart and have a look at it.
Take pictures and post them here if you like.
Dont rely on a garage or "specialist" vans are "old school" get your hands dirty lumps.
