Gear linkage help!

Hi all, I have recently encountered trouble selecting forward gears but not all the time, reverse has alwYs been a work of art but all of a sudden when sat a traffic lights last week I couldn't get 1st, 2nd to 3rd seem ok but 3rd to 4th stiff. My question is where do I start with greasing the linkage and what are the common causes? Any help would be much appreciated....
