No in-line fuses?! Potential fire hazard?!!??

Post by chuggers72 »

Ok - so I've been meaning to check my electrics for a while (finally got around to it!). After checking the split charger I've realised there are no in line fuses on both the leisure and starter battery between the split charger  Am I right in thinking this could be a potential fire risk? If I so will sort this weekend; however, I have found contradicting info over which fuses to have in line - is it 10 or 30 amp?
Cheers
PS for the observant ones this is a repost with the correct subject title!?! :D

Yes it should have fuses next to each battery, the fuses are to protect the cable, so size is determined by the size of cable that has been used.

OK cheers - I'm looking to replace the cable with 50 amp between the batteries so I'll put a 30 amp fuse in line. Sound OK?

30 amp is the minimum even they can pop if the leisure battery battery is flat, better to use a 30A or 40A maxi fuses they can tolerate higher surges.

All sound advice from Bigherb. And while you're at it, check the cables in this article and renew if need be. Unfortunately many of these vehicles have quite a bit of corrosion in these cables and after 25 years or more, are up for replacement. It'll help guard against winter breakdowns:
