1.8 or 2.0 gti ?

Post by dridgy »

hi.
im thinking about changing my diesel engine for a petrol lump.
was thinking about a gti lump.
i would probably preffer the 2.0 over the 1.8 but what is the performance bettween the two engines?
is there much difference?
i gather the 2.0 litre engine is taller so therefore a bit harder to fit ?
so is it worth the effort over the 1.8 ?
also what sort of fuel consumption would i be looking at?

any advice appreciated
thanks

2l every time.

Makes negligible amount of more torque BUT it is made at substantially lower rpm ( peak torque is at something like 2500 or 2600 whereas the 1.8 is at 3500 or 3600)

Smaller inlet manifold and drops in no issues whereas PB engine has huge inlet manifold, they are not interchangeable due to injectors.

AAG has a bit more wiring but if you can do an engine swap and can read and write your own name then you can read the wiring diagram ok, it's no great shakes.

As an AGG convert I have to agree. I've owned numerous 1.8 GTI's over the years and having driven a friends van (1.8 2wd tintop) back to back with mine (2.0 Syncro hightop) there is a noticable difference in the overall power delivery.

'90 Syncro Hightop. Ex-BUPA/Rowan ambulance with 2.0L GTI power and some curious windows.

Hiya all! I was going to start a new thread, but I'm hoping that my question kinda follows onto Dridgy's question (hiya there!). I'm replacing my 1.6d CS. I've found a 3H gearbox for sale, but it has no bell housing, does my CS fit (I know I'll have to get a 5 stick)? Also - I've found an AGG engine which is a beauty, sounds and feels tight and sharp, with low mileage, but it's an AC + Power steering version. Is this a real chore to remove? Only it looks like a donor from Valhalla. I hope you can offer some help.

Cheers,

Mark.

Can ditch the PAS and AC. No problems. Either just take them off and use the golf bracket that holds the alternator or use the CS alternator stand.

Can't remember off the top off my head about which pulley you need to use for correct offset for belt Alignment but will be very obvious.

Check output on alternators, probably find the golf one is the better bet to keep for output :ok
