Is this normal for old gearbox oil?
I drained and refilled my gearbox last night (4 speed JX 1.6TD) and this is what came out. Nasty

Looks like there's a brain growing in there DK! I'm sure someone will be along to let you know - I changed mine recently and the smell that came off it was eye-watering!

I've seen it before, sort of a separation, never given it much thought but could be foaming (small bubbles) from the churning and working of the oil. I can't say I'd be too worried by it TBH.
Certainly looks like it needed changing though......

Indeed.
End of the day, it's gearbox oil.
If you're worried about what came out, just do another change in a few hundred miles, and see what that looks like. If that still looks manky, do another. And another. It's not much time and not much money.
If it starts to sound like a bag of bolts, then you're gonna have to get it rebuilt.
Or you could skip a couple of oil changes and get it rebuilt now, just in case the sky falls on your head.
