Propex going in today, but where to put it!

Post by fairwynds »

Just scratching my head today, fitting the Propex HS2000 system. Ive got a bog standard Bilbo Arragon interior, but the underbed locker is already taken by the LPG cylinder. Hmmmm, only really leaves the locker under the sink, behind the drivers seat. Only problem there is the placement of the two 40mm holes that need to be drilled through the floor. If I mount the unit on the floor, the holes will foul the sill under the van by quite a bit. So Ive taken out the shelf halfway up the locker and will reposition it lower down, in order to gain some clearance for the flexible inlet and exhaust hoses. It looks like it's going to be ok. My GasSafe buddy is on his way to assist/certify when done (fingers crossed) and then I will have lovely heat, and I can go to lovely Wales and lovely Scotland without perishing!
FW (southern softy!) :rofl

....he's still working on it....
The 8mm copper gas pipe (recommended) of course doesnt match the existing 6mm stuff already fitted for fridge/cooker, typical. The unit itself is being plumbed into the locker mentioned above, and sits on two wooden 'mounts' to give adequate clearance beneath, allowing the required 40mm holes to be set a bit further inboard, thus avoiding fouling the inner sill beneath it. All going well though :ok

Autohomes mounted the original Propex underneath my van so I screwed the replacement in the same place. Hopefully the zinc primer will stop the casing rotting too quickly.

...spent the morning rewiring lots of old cruddy wire which was routed behind the fridge. Getting rid of 'chocolate blocks' (you gotta love 'professional' companies that used chocolate blocks!). Managed to route wiring for thermostat through various cavities with the judicious use of hooked piece of wire and kite string! The whole job's taking longer than expected but am thoroughly enjoying the fettling!

Won't that exhaust get hot in the cupboard? I'd be fitting it flush so the sleeved section goes thru the floor to the outside before fitting the steel flexible exhaust pipe.

Either that or put a spacing piece of tube through so that there is no chance of setting the wood alight! Wood and exhausts don't mix. :) If it gets to the same sort of temps as a diesel/petrol heater I would make the hole in the wood twice that size.

Also, I hope that you don't have any underseal on the chassis where you have tied the exhaust to it - ideally you should stand it off away from it.

Thank you. Yes, the exhaust will be sleeved with a fireproof collar and I agree re the underseal, will utilise some P clips instead...

I only wanted to fit a Propex unit, and so far over the last few days the fridge has been out, the gas locker repositioned, the sink removed, a new onboard water tank fitted, new 12v sockets, repositioned the tap electrics, cleaned, fettled and generally getting very shipshape! Well, what else to do in this bloody weather eh! And now its snowing again, so all the more reason to get it sorted! Main delay has been sourcing 8mm to 6mm copper reducing couplings for the gas lines - got them now though, and the plumber chap is back tomorrow.
In meantime, Ive had the sink out to reseal it, gain access to the voids underneath (for the electrics etc) and fit a new tap. As the picture shows, it's a bit past it!
Can anyone answer the following tho... Its a 'Nova Comet' single tap with a micro switch. The van also had a (doorbell) push button fitted to the side of the sink unit, press that and water flowed from tap. My guess is this was an addition/bodge to get round the dodgy tap (it looks knackered to me). Anyone else got this tap? Does yours just switch on and off using only the tap knob itself?
