mechanical help please. Clutch problem abroad

Hi all.

French travles 1000 miles in, and have just stopped to see my folks...luckily!

Drving home, and as I released the clutch peddle, I felt it go hard underneath my foot. I managed to drive the approx 8 miles home. (Managed to to rough gear changes a couple of times, and a coupel of near stalls on round abouts.

SO Im no mechanic but my thoughts are....Gear box hopefully ok as it drove fine.
....Clutch plates ok as it wasnt loosing power at all?


Could it be a clutch cable or mechanism from the peddle?

Ive had a look underneath but am no mechanic, is it a cable clutch on t25s or Hydraulic? I cant see hydraulics anywhere



Any advice would be much appreciated.

We have break down cover so will call them shortly to hopefully get her lifted to a garage and fixed.

The clutch is hydraulic not on a cable, could it be the slave cylinder?

Hi...and thanks. With that in mind, Im thinking YES it could well be.

Would that explain the clutch peddle becoming stiff feeling?

Check the reservoir under the instrument cowl it is the same one as the brakes.

Just a thought but there is, as far as I can remember, may be wrong, a short shaft between the slave cylinder and clutch actuator arm. Possibly the shaft has worn a hole in the actuator arm OR the little shft has "fell out" This would allow the slave cylinder to go full travel giving a hard high pedal but not disengaging the clutch. You can clearly see the clutch slave and clutch release arm as you look at the engine it is to the rear on the left hand side. Good luck.

What year is your van as the early ones did have cables and later ones hydraulics. Is it all gears or just some you can't get?

Where in France are you?

Be wary of VW main dealers, they're worse than useless.

Embrayage is clutch.

Embrayage a opération hydraulique would be a hydraulically operated clutch.

Were near Royan, we where about to leave for Lacanau, but the RAC are sending recovery tomorrow morning, so hoping it will be a quick and good fix, when they find whats wrong. Gagin to get back on the road already!
