Steering squeeking and juddering!

Post by mwheatley »

Hi All,

The steering on my van has recently started to feel a bit wierd. When you turn the steering wheel when stationary it judders and feels as if you're pushing through some friction. It also squeeks at the same time!! It doesn't domit when driving along, only when staionary or very slow.

The van was off the road for the winter, although I did drive it every couple of weeks to keep it running.

A local mechanic took a cursory glance and suggested the bushes needed changing. Any further thoughts from anyone? It's only started happening a week or so, funnily enough after I had the service done!

It's a 1990 Westy LHD 1.6td with power steerinh.

Thanks in advance.

Matt

There are some standard checks you can make yourself to some of the components

Remove the column shroud and check there is no play in the two top hat rubber bushes in the collapsible part of the column

There are also 3 square rubber couplings. One inside the cab at the base of the column under the domed plastic cover and two under the front of the van before the steering rack (you will need to drop the spare for a good look).

See the 3 pictures on here

This may not solve your problem but it's a start

I would also re-post your problem in mechanical rather than wheels :ok
