Core plug leak - serious or not?

I noticed some coolant leakage around the block. After researching the matter it seems to be one of the core / freeze plugs. I spotted the leak whilst I was carrying out a repair to a blowing exhaust on my 1.7 KY. I needed to do this repair to get through the MOT .

There is a fair amount of crystallised build up around the plug in question and small seepage of the green fluid.

My question is if it easy to change the plug and do I need any special tools. Secondly are the plugs easy to get hold of.

Normally the rot from the inside or just generally become thin.

If you stabbed it with a screwdriver it may even go through (happened to me
Before)

However they are quite easy to replace and only cost a few quid each.

I got mine from eurocarparts, I think all VW blocks of the time are the same using 52 ish mm core plugs. If ours is a diesel that is.

You just need a hammer and a drift of some kind I.e large socket.

Now, this might be a really stupid question, but do you need to drain the coolant system first?
