How much oil in a 1.6 diesel? With/without filter change.
Sorry, I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I'm not certain re changing filter at the same time.
How much oil goes into a 1.6 n/a diesel with filter change?
How much oil goes into a 1.6 n/a diesel without filter change?

I've just decided to switch on my brain and check the owner's manual, found the answer and came zipping back to the computer to delete my last posting...
But the manual says:
4.5 litres with oil change
4.0 litres without
for diesel (and petrol) engines.
Thanks lhd, but are you sure? Any other opinions?

Simon Baxter wrote:For the cost of a Oil filter what is the point in doing a oil change without doing a filter? Especially on a Diesel!
I'm actually expecting to be doing multiple oil changes, because of an issue with the filler pipe. But thanks for the info, I've heard of people changing oil every 3K, filter every 6K, wondered if that made sense. Perhaps not, then.
Thanks as always.

Just looked in another manual and it says 3.5 & 4.0 to febrauary 84.
4.0 & 4.5 after.......
Thats got me really worried now as it did not mention this in the bently CD and if they cant get a simple thing like that right, I might as well throw the CD away.............
Although mine is a 1983 so I guess it's ok for mine.
Can you confirm this Simon........

FECKING CD....
It has just occured to me that my original Cs engine was replaced with a JP engine from a Golf, which I'm sure was manufactured after Feb 84.
Thus meaning, I have been gunning my baby with .5 of a litre less than it should have....
Watching this post has probably saved 5 years of engine life.
I wondered why even after a relatively early oil cange it looked like black treacle
They say don't believe everyting you read, now I know why...........

if your unsure, the routine is to fill up what u can in the oil filter before putting it on not forgetting to put a wet figers worth of oil on the seal!
And fill up slowly checking the dipstick as you fill up.
When you think its nearly at the level run the engine for a couple of minutes let it setle and recheck and fill to required level.
Only way to be sure.

WHO'S THE MORE FOOLISH? THE FOOL OR THE FOOL THAT FOLLOWS HIM?
Same here, my van is a 1983 with a replacement engine which I believe was produced after feb 84, so if there is a differance in oil level before and after 1984 does any body know what the difference is?Unfortunately, I don't trust the accuracy of the dipstick...
I know the sump and ancilleries were taken from the original 1983 engine.
My thinking is that the difference is in the oil pump?
So hopefully the 3.5 & 4.0 is the way to go for me.
MacAoidh do you know the engine number as that will give you a date in which it was manufactured.
considering your van was produced after feb 1984 then as long as your engine was too I would hazard a guess the it's 4.0 & 4.5 for you.
As there are no other replies I think we are in this together.

as I know my engine number and vans production date I can phone VW and find out what the changes before and after feb 84 were.
I think that most of the diesels are more or less the same and will take a look to find where the engine number is located on your engine,
get back to you soon.....
