Is it a stupid idea
I have a Range Rover waiting for something to happen and a 86' D.G. waiting for something more to happen do you reackon it's worth combining the two or is it a conversion that happens.
It's nothing a great deal of time and money can't fix

If you're going to the effort of putting another engine in then you might as well choose something that actually fits. There's a fair number of them.
The best place for Range Rovers is with Land Rover afficionados - they are prepared to give these peculiar vehicles the time and attention they need to be kept on the road (well they say that about Syncro owners )
NOt a bad engine for a VW! I was thinking to install a 200Tdi also from Rover @ my syncro engine bay but I think is too much high...
V8's are not so high and not so wide so...

Saw one at VF 3 or 4 years ago, bloke said it was a scream... ok to run if kept below 70 (which he said wasnt easy )... but had it off the clock and still more to go .... sounded bloomin great ... but bet it would like gearboxes....
