Hightop roof sealant

Post by crazyhorse »

Hi guys,

The beading in between the hightop and vehicle body needs to be renewed.. any suggestions what I can use? I used silka 522 but it’s coming off and now there is a lovely space for water to enter..

How did you get the old stuff out?
Was it difficult?

I would say that it was poor preparation that has led to failure - you must clean, clean, clean and then use something to remove all traces of oil/grease etc, I use acetone. There is no sign of adhesion there.
If someone has used silicone previously to seal it you will never get a polyurethane sealant/adhesive to grip without great attention to removing all traces of it which is very difficult.

That was my thought.
Contaminated surface.

Sikaflex is usually very good as a sealant or bonding medium.
A good degreaser is needed.

I used to love genklene or trichloroethane.
That would clear your nasal passages and dissolve your brain at a thousand paces.
But bloody good at cleaning without leaving a residue.

I could be a mile off, but would brake cleaner spray not do a similar job.

Most probably as it is mainly acetone in those sprays but acetone is a lot cheaper.

On a good clean surface, it sticks like $#!7.
So definitely more than good enough for your intended use.

A good alternative is Tigerseal. Same applies, needs a thorough clean, but it's especially good at sticking anything to anything.

Being a hamfisted oaf, for me it's usually "index finger" to "middle finger" or "hand" to "lovely clean kitchen cupboard" mind you.

If cleaning something with acetone, I pinch Woman's makeup cotton pads and use them, they're ideal.
