You mention "engine not doing much since rebuild"
And Stesaw mentioned "could be valves not seated".
Could the garage have got the valves mixed up before putting back?
As with the compresion test, maybe only the
LHS front 8 got paired up correctly!

I doubt you could mess up the intake/exhaust valves as they are different sizes so they wouldn't fit right at all.

More like a valve seat damage or exhaust valve is burned. Piston rings could be worn, could be barrel seals.

"I doubt you could mess up the intake/exhaust valves as they are different sizes so they wouldn't fit right at all".

Misunderstanding here, don't mean intake for exhaust but cylinder 1 valve in cylinder 2 hole etc etc.
Making all valves fit but not ground to perfect seating.
And "LHS front 8" the only one back in original locastion.
Prepare for the worst but hope for the best

Update 2

Took van for a run today and after the fiddling it ran well for a while although somewhat lacking any power it's a good job there are no real holes around! but then it started stalling at junctions again and back fired on petrol this time.
What I really did notice though is that oil is coming out of the breather not bucket loads but more than a smear.
And while running there is a real oily smell coming from the engine.

Could it be that the lost compression is going into the crankcase thus explaining two things at the same time?

Could be burning oil so bad rings perhaps? Pretty sure thats what my 1.9 was doing. If your plugs are oily then thats probably it, but until you get it looked at its just best guess.

I think I've possibly found a prospective looker. He says he will make some enquiries on Monday and give me some prices
Probably best that I'm sitting down when he rings :rofl

1, A price to remove the heads to see if anything can be seen
2, To rebuild the heads if needed
3, To replace rings or pistons and barrels if needed
4 To rebuild with 2.1 pistons and barrels

All of the above assuming the bottom end is aok!

He hasn't got back to me as yet so I'll have to gee him up tomorrow.

4 isn't an option without splitting the case - different crank (and cam).

OK didn't realise that. Maybe he has the parts necessary as it was his idea!

No time today but will get onto him tomorrow hopefully.
