Re: A Numpty and his 2.1 Project
Well semi successful..
The cam gear won't budge maybe the heat gun isn't enough for it.
I guess getting a new torch to get more heat onto it or a puller, the latter being difficult to find it seems. Most places are out of stock of them, saw one on Amazon for £400 something.. ha ha ha. Going rate seems to be about £60-70. Maybe I should put up a post in wanted, maybe someones got one knocking around they don't use anymore.

Ah, didn't realise you didn't have a puller. It's never coming off without! Something like this would do the job. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/263634205032

I do have one but it won't fit. I've ordered that one you linked so hopefully it will work!
Oh also you checked your latest PM regarding pistons?

Re: A Numpty and his 2.1 Project
So, good news!
One: The vans gone in for welding work.
Two: Got the puller today, plopped it on the crank and off it came.
Bad news,
Probably wont have the van for about three weeks.
And after inspecting the gear a few of the teeth were in bad shape.
Not sure if I mullered them when taking off but I wouldn't have thought there would have been enough force to do that? I made sure that the puller was on as far as it could go and was flush on the gear so it wasn't on the edge of any of the teeth.
A fair few of the ends are worn, so I guess new gear.
Now I can see the final crank journal after removing the bearing all look nice and smooth and shiney with no marks, however I will get the crank polished up at a local machine shop at somepoint.

Re: A Numpty and his 2.1 Project
So, some more slow progress today decided to start on this horrid job of head studs.
With some heat and some faffing using locking two nuts together on each stud I managed to get some off. Had to stop as I knackered the thread on the nut I was using and I couldn't find any others.. plus it had got dark so I stopped for today.
I've found putting pressure on the stud and boping it with a hammer helps.. however I need to find a way of securing the case halfs and trying to put pressure on the stud while tapping the end with a hammer AND holding the case so it doesn't move is a challenge!
I think tomorrow will try and setup some way of clamping down the case halfs, got plenty of clamps. Will be glad when this is over, they can then be sent off for a good clean.

Spot the difference.
Ohh bugger.
well at least one had to do that.. Still one refuses to shift on this side of the head. Making a start on the other side..

But why are you removing them? They look good to me...apart from snapped one, of course!

Re: A Numpty and his 2.1 Project
They look ok in the picture but they are all pittied. So rather than take any chances im swapping the lot.
The other side is the same.
Got three off the other side before I gave up for the day.
The others are being a real git, so I think I need some more heat. I thought about getting some of that shock cooling spray that halfrauds have.

I alway thought it was a plenty of heat and molegrips type of job?
What are you using for heat? Shove it in the oven for an hour perhaps?

Re: A Numpty and his 2.1 Project
Double nut jobbie and some heat from a heat gun.
The studs have been soaking in plus gas for a month there abouts. Just the heat gun wont shift the stubborn ones, which makes sense it hasn't the power really, but it did well.
Ordered a stud removal tool to get the broken one out. Might cut the others down to lessen the twisting.
Will see what happens.
Still got meat on the broken one so I should be able to get it out, problem is it's a corner one...

Re: A Numpty and his 2.1 Project
But that snapped one in the corner will pose a problem. I'd put a nut on it then blast the middle with the mig welder, making sure you have enough current to penetrate the stud. Let it cool before reheating the case around it with a decent sized propane torch, whilst gently back n forthing it with a socket, extension and breaker bar, interspersed with a few hammer taps. Might take a few heat cycles, and a few re-welds, but it should shift it.

Yeah I was tapping the ends of the studs with a 2lb hammer while keeping putting pressure on earlier which made them shift. Hearing that initial ting, then putting some plug gas on and working them back and forth.
I did doubt that I would get the stud remover in there being in the corner.. always gotta be so akward! So will be a good chance to break the welder out as you say.
