TW 25 1.9 petrol engine cuts out.
Can anyone help with this intermittent problem.
The problem is, the engine ok on an outward journey between two and ten miles . Then after 20min to an hour with the engine off, then return journey engine cuts out when speed drops approximately below 25mph, eg at a junction roundabout etc. ( 18 cut outs in a ten mile journey!)
Engine starts immediately on the turn of a key , or on bump start,
Jet cleaned , fuel pipe cleaned , new fuel filter, new fuel tank, and distributor cap. new rotor arm.
I'm an oldun so don't have too much money, Don't want to buy a hall sender if not the problem what else could it be.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

May be an air leak somewhere.
As a get you going fix you could try increasing the idle stop screw but you really need to find the problem.
I'd start by checking the small vac pipes to carb and distributor, then test the distributor vacuum unit.
don't go randomly buying bits, it's highly unlikely to be hall sender.
DG or DF, what carb?
And where are you, sometimes somebody local can take a look.

Thanks itchyfeet for a quick response,
but Had vac tubes checked all ok.. am struggling understand why an air leak would only effect the return journey.
I have my van from new for 26 years its done about 85000 mile and never had any significant engine problems, so this is unusual.
Am in Norfolk alysham, would appreciate any comments.

Return journey engine is still warm, warmer than first thing at this time of year
choke is off so an air leak would be more likely to stall that when you drive cold early and choke is on.

Could be a pinhole in the fuel line. I had similar when touring Scotland a few years ago. It would run fine, then cut out for no apparent reason. It depends how well the fuel pump is working, how big the hole is, and how much the carb is drinking.
A mechanic replaced the complete fuel line and sorted the problem.

+2 on that, I was having cutout problems before I checked and cleaned this, mine was full of crud and hadn't been cleaned for a very long time.

Hi all
Been off line for a while, ... still having same problem, secondary filter removed and cleaned out no obvious signs, all clean. Same problem.
So can any body help... its like this..
Has done 8 mile round trip no problems.. three mile round trip no problems... repeat 3 mile round trip after three hours during which engine had repeat cut out 9 times.
I am really desperate for a repair as have numerous hospital appointments to attend.. so any help would be gratefully received.

Do you get a spark when it's cut out? I had similar and it was a tired fuel pump.

It appears the fuel system is good so now look at the ignition system. Soon as it konks out see if you have a spark. You could use an old spark plug rather than removing a fitted one. I had an episode of the engine cutting out when warm, luckily a friend stopped once to assist, there was no spark. We kept the ignition switch on then systematically wiggled all the wires and plugs on the ignition system - black box, coil, dizzy etc. Suddenly the van jumped into life - it was the three pin plug on the side of the dizzy. Cleaned it up and had no issues since.
Good luck

As it starts staight away after conking out.... first thing that springs to mind is the pickup pipe in the tank is picking up crud, how old is your tank?
