starter problems

Post by onc onc »

So today I replaced the starter motor. However still no joy, I can hear a click from the solenoid, but starter not kicking in. I run a jump lead from the live on the battery to the back of the starter and tried again, Bingo it starts. So what do I look at now. Any ideas peeps.

If its a new starter then bad main cables (or poor connection each end) could be the issue. Other possibility is faulty ignition switch. The click may not actually be the solenoid but something else in the engine bay.

The small trigger wire is also a notorious weak point on these being so exposed and reliant on a relatively flimsy spade terminal. A completely lifeless starter motor is often caused by problems with this wire.

If second-hand starter, get it off and remove end cap by undoing two screws and sliding e-clip aside. Check condition of braided wire. The solenoid itself may no longer be passing high current but you'll need to inspect it as above for starters (excuse the pun). Could be poor earth or poor connection from battery too.

I did a write up sometime ago on renewing main cables. Most T25s suffer from bad cables after 30 years:

Hope it helps.

If you just put the jump lead onto the battery input post on the solenoid and operated the key to make it start, you have narrowed it down to the main lead ....

Thanks guys, my feelings is the main wire. It's a recon starter from Brickwerks, have tried the small wire onto the solenoid. Been trying to trace the main lead back from the starter seem to lose it when traced back to just under the nearside front seat. Any idea where it goes off to. And are these leads available anywhere. Cheers

Starter terminal (heavy one) is joined to battery positive and alternator. Thats about it. When I rewired mine I just snipped the main one (leaving it in place) and ran a brand new cable. All covered as above.
