Where's my W connection alternator help !

Post by sternal »

Hello all !

Thinking of fitting a rev counter which which has to be connected to the W connection on the alternator, having had a look at the back of the alternator I'm sort of unsure of which one it is there is a W marked in the middle above the centre connection on the plug. Would I be right in thinking its the middle one of these connections ? (left is B+ right is D+)

Any help would be great

You can always try and fit a W terminal if it is missing

assuming you don't have one consider looking for a second hand early diesel alternator, I have picked a petrol one up for 20 quid before, keep this one as a spare.

WHS ^^^

An alternator only takes 15 minutes to swap. You could sell yours and that would go a long way towards paying for a Diesel one. By the way, pretty sure if you go to a breakers, the ones off older Diesel Passats and Golfs will be the same (you might need to swap over the pulley). Just make sure you get one with the big plug on connectors, like yours, not the latter (and more powerful?) stud and nut connection.
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

Black/red wire is the colour for the W signal....

if it doesn't have one it is quite easy to put one on, I've done it on mine.

I'm out at the moment, I'll hopefully remember to post a link to the right page in my build thread later on.. But basically remove back of alt, you will see 3 poles(phases) , solder a wire to one of them= job done :D
