Thinking of fitting a rev counter which which has to be connected to the W connection on the alternator, having had a look at the back of the alternator I'm sort of unsure of which one it is there is a W marked in the middle above the centre connection on the plug. Would I be right in thinking its the middle one of these connections ? (left is B+ right is D+)
dont know if this is anything on the same wiring loom on the back of the black plug was an unused wire not connected to anything ( wire coming from battery direction but in same black sleeve) anything ?
picture 3 red/black wire
im not sure I have the skill to rewire a W in to the alternator !
assuming you don't have one consider looking for a second hand early diesel alternator, I have picked a petrol one up for 20 quid before, keep this one as a spare.
An alternator only takes 15 minutes to swap. You could sell yours and that would go a long way towards paying for a Diesel one. By the way, pretty sure if you go to a breakers, the ones off older Diesel Passats and Golfs will be the same (you might need to swap over the pulley). Just make sure you get one with the big plug on connectors, like yours, not the latter (and more powerful?) stud and nut connection.

I'm out at the moment, I'll hopefully remember to post a link to the right page in my build thread later on.. But basically remove back of alt, you will see 3 poles(phases) , solder a wire to one of them= job done

Which is what pirate-pete's link above says
