Warning light woes

Post by chrisevans »

I have live with this for quite some time as I don't do many miles but I really want to sort out my warning lights. The oil light does not come on when the ignition is on( briefly flicks on). When started it doesn't go out and low revs then at some points over 2k rpm the buzzer joins in. I have replaced the sensor and checked out op at tick over and at 2 k and was assured these were OK. Think I have correct oil. Sometime times the oil light stays off for some time. The coolant light flashes with ignition on and when started never goes out even when the relay (43?) is pulled .

My conclusion is that the dash is the problem ( earth or Pcb) but I would like to test the feeds to the dash to prove this. Any comments on the process I have followed thus far or things I have missed? I would love to swap in a working dash to disprove quickly if anyone has a reb counter petrol one for sale or lend?

If you are confident that the oil pressure is OK, I would ground the wire to the high oil pressure switch and see how the buzzer reacts. If it still buzzes above 2000 rpm then there is an electrical problem somewhere. Do the instrument panel lights work normally? If there is an earth problem at the dash you may find they go out when on main beam.

Have you read this?

If the oil light doesnt come on with the ignition switch, but comes on when the engine is running, you either have the wrong switch or the wire in the engine bay are swapped over.
The led warning uses a normally closed switch (on when no pressure)
The buzzer uses a normally open switch.

I will double check the operation of the oil light and report back

Having double checked when the ignition is switched to on without starting ,the oil light briefly illuminates (less than half a second) then goes out. Can somebody please confirm whether this is normal or not?

With the ignition ON, my oil light flashes (1990 dj. I think it is a flashing LED) constantly.
It only goes off when I turn the engine over (oil starts to get pumped around the system)
Try taking the lead off the low pressure sender (under the cylinder heads on the petrol waterboxers) and grounding it.
The light should come on and stay on (flashing)

If you have the second oil pressure switch and buzzer circuit then the oil pressure light should flash when ignition is on, until engine is started. With a single oil pressure switch then the light doesn't flash, just stays lit until engine start.

As per the other thread - I believe this is down to incorrect sensor being fitted by my mechanic(!) when I asked him to test the pressure. A HP switch was in the LP fitting - they work in different ways so I was getting dodgy signal to dash. As a bonus the water level seems cured as well (the wiring in the box in the engine bay is a little "unorthodox')

The water light is back on again - starting to drive me a bit mad now. The symptoms are as follows:
Ignition on Water flashing light comes on flashing . Does not ever go out - tried pulling relay 43, light still flashes.

Temperature gauge works normally and doesn't go to hot.

Fan cycles as normal. Coolant is full in expansion tank.

I started checking continuity between the tank and the gauge but can't seem to get a connection between the sender and the 6 way plug in box .

This sounds a lot like your gauge is faulty - specifically the capacitor in the gauge .....
I had the same issue and fixed by replacing capacitor ..... take a look at this thread
https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... +Capacitor

If the red light is flashing, relay 43 is removed and the needle isn't on the hot side then it is almost certainly the capacitor that is at fault.

Interesting - where did you get the capacitor from as a matter of interest?

I guess if I do it this way http://www.vanagonauts.com/Warning-Light-Fix241.htm then I don't have to remove the rivet? I might get a man I know who fixes iPhone /Tv's etc to do this for me

Yes - I ended up removing the rivet just to get access and be able to see what I was doing - it's pretty tight space-wise in there ..... fiddly but do-able!!

Pulled the gauge to do this - on the way out I noticed one of the nuts was a little loose. Having refitted it this morning everything is working fine. Happy days.
