Its possible to change the clutch without removing gearbox completely - done it a few times but only when release bearing is in excellent condition. I've always changed v-dub clutches on a roational basis. ie change the lot, then the next time just swap out the friction plate, then whole clutch the next etc. Worked for me over 28 years and saves money. You do need to keep a log. Garages won't do that though.

im thinking its the release bearing i need to change more than clutch, ill do it all. but will log it as you say, anyother jobs to do as its out? box fluid? if so what and how many litres?
