Starter motor playing up on 1.9 DG
So I'm waiting for a third issue as this is my recent second.
Starter doesn't run each time I turn Harry over. I hear the solenoid. I hear my fuel pump. But the motor does not turn. Sometimes it turns on the second attempt, or the third. Once I had to give it a clout and then it worked.
Sounds like it's replacement time. Any suggestions or comments?

Re: Starter motor playing up on 1.9 DG
I assume you mean "starter doesnt turn"
Have you checked/ cleaned the contacts on the starter?
A dirty spade connector or grubby earth can cause problems.
Use the search. lots of people have had similar problems and solved it with varying methods from renewing the spade connector to striping the starter motor and cleaning the contacts.

Just be sure it is the starter and not the condition of the wiring otherwise you could end up throwing money at it without actually nailing the problem: https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/VW ... ain_cables" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Starter motor playing up on 1.9 DG
Nice article!
Sometimes it starts first time. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries with the ignition key. Would you expect a random pattern with cable corrosion, but that it always works eventually (thus far)? I would have thought something inside more likely such as carbon build up, wear etc.

Re: Starter motor playing up on 1.9 DG
Check the signal wire 6mm spade terminal and more importantly the wiring to it. Common to find them heavily corroded and high resistance.

Re: Starter motor playing up on 1.9 DG
You can also get random response through a failing ignition switch but if you've replaced it, it'll be wiring to or within starter.

It's only checking a wire and a terminal ....

Starter motor playing up on 1.9 DG
Ian. I believe that's ok as I've piggybacked the initial freed to my electric fuel pump off that, and when the starter isn't turning I can still hear the pump. I can also hear the solenoid. The terminal looks ok.
