DG 1.9 End Float

I have a DG 1.9 engine, it’s a Vege recon unit.
It’s never let me down but has always been very tapy and performance wasn’t great.
I’ve started to strip it down and one of the 1st things I noticed on removal of the flywheel there is no crankshaft end float shims.
So my question is what effect would this have if any. I assume it should be shimmed ?

Yes, whoever fitted it should have shimed it when swapping the flywheel.
is it early or late engine ( one or two oil pressure switches), shim setup slightly different.

damage, who knows how much but not sure it would affect performance, just wear bearings I'd think.

Thanks itchyfeet, as I thought. It’s a late DG with 2 oil switches although my van only uses the one between the pushrod tubes.
Thanks for the link to your post great work. Put the flywheel back on to see if I could tell how much float there is, and its enough to be visible.
Dial gauge on order.

Do you have the thrust washer?

if so next you need a 0.4 shim, its a larger outside diameter, Brickwerks are cheaper than VWH

after that you usually have two shims they are smaller outside diameter, but you can use as many or as little as needed.

then finally you should have one of these before the oil seal but the purpose really escapes me
