Continuing exhaust problem

Post by vinylbumra »

Hi there everyone apologies in advance for the essay! I am a newbie to joining the forum but have had my 1990 ex deutche telecom 1.7d t25 for 4 years and have looked on here loads for great advice and expertise. In that time I have had numerous problems with the exhaust which has now snapped again. Thought I might get somewhere looking on the forum but nothing quite seems to match up with my issue. The exhaust keeps snapping where it leaves the manifold. I think this is due to excessive shaking of the engine. I have also had a "new style" mesh flexi joint fitted as the standard type started blowing. What could be causing this? Could it simply be the engine mounts need replacing? I have tried adjusting the maximum fuelling nut but still have quite a wobble going on. The left and right brackets that hold the silencer on have been both broken and welded at some time in the past and I have had at least 5 trips to the garage to no avail aswell as changing mounts and downpipe myself, everytime around 2 to 3 months later another snap, blowing joint, broken mount etc! Apologies for being so vague but I am happy to provide any photos or further info to the best of my ability. Thanks for reading!

The exhaust should move at the same time as the engine as the silencer is fixed to the engine so shouldn't break like that. You shouldn't need a flexi joint really (I know that the 1.7 engine exhaust has a flexi joint if bought from some sources though)
Photo's would help - maybe someone has bodged the mounts in the past. Pics of the mounting areas would help most.

Hi there, thanks for the reply, I have taken some pics of the mounts and upon closer inspection have noticed that there has indeed been a bodge. The lefthand bracket has been replaced as it snapped off but the replacement (not an official part) has not been aligned properly so the silencer sits higher on the left hand side than the right i.e if you look at it from the rear of the vehicle the silencer is slightly diagonal. Could this have put too much stress on the downpipe and snapped it? I have mentioned this to several mechanics in the past and they ignored me, unfortunately can't show a picture as the right mount has gone so it looks normal at the moment. Unfortunately my pics are too large so will have to take some more tomorrow as it's going dark now. Thanks for the help.

That certainly won't help! It should be the same bracket each end like this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Volkswagen ... 3ccb7154fd. You can see the flexi pipe on the downpipe also.

OK, thanks for getting back to me. Will see what I can do to amend the bodge. Might just be worth starting from scratch! Would also like to thank you for your help in navigating the forum re: photos etc. Good thing going on here!

That one I linked to above is about the cheapest for the whole setup - at £60 the lot like that I wouldn't try to remedy the bodge ( the silencer looks like it is on its last legs anyway), at least you know that it will all fit together as intended. I had a silencer from them previously and it lasted well and only changed it with an engine change.
